Profile

The Child Health Research Institute (CHRI) founded in 1987, is one program that is part of the Lawson Health Research Institute which encompasses research activities across all hospital sites. It is a collaborative venture of the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario Foundation, the University of Western Ontario's Department of Paediatrics, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario.

The CHRI is divided into 5 thematic research programs:
Developmental Biology. This is the field of life sciences that seeks to understand
fundamental processes of embryonic, fetal, and postnatal development. Research in these areas have
contributed to the understanding and treatment of a variety of diseases and disabilities such as birth defects, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, growth deficiency, and infertility.

Molecular Genetics. This program at CHRI has been established to support research into the understanding of genetic factors that are major determinants of health and well-being in infants and children. During the past few years human genome research has identified and sequenced many genes in which changes result in a wide range of childhood illness and disability.

Child Health & Well-Being. This program is an interdisciplinary research initiative that focuses on the social determinants of child health. The social circumstances and environments in which families live are important factors in
