Western Engineering views engineering as a caring profession, bearing tremendous social responsibility. Our faculty members conduct leading-edge research in topical areas that benefit society. Areas of special expertise include: alternative and renewable energy, smart machines with medical applications, natural disaster mitigation and management, nanotechnology, and much more. Students at the undergraduate and graduate level benefit from this knowledge, as faculty members draw from their research to teach.
Western Engineering is excited to introduce a new undergraduate program - Green Process Engineering. This program is the first of its kind in Canada. The basic objective of the program is to combine and integrate the fundamental principles of chemical engineering to design commercial products and processes that are safe, economical and environmentally friendly. First year students will have the opportunity to apply to the Green Process Engineering program upon completing Western Engineering's Common First Year.
Western offers a Masters in Environment and Sustainability program, which is a three-term, one year course-based interdisciplinary program designed for students interested in equipping themselves with the skills and experience needed to be selected for positions as sustainability professionals and eventually become leaders in industry, non-governmental organizations and government departments.
Throughout the academic year students become acquainted with four pillars of learning: planning and management, business sustainability, engineering solutions, and ecosystem health. At the end of the second term students have the opportunity to work with a client in a non-academic setting in small teams over a four-month consulting project. In this time they are given the opportunity to apply the skills they have acquired throughout the year, are given practical experience, and learn to prepare and deliver both a professional environmental document and lecture at an academic conference. In the third term, a four month period from May - August, students engage in a paid co-operative placement where they are paired with a host organization.

A tremendous growth in environmental awareness is fuelling the need for highly skilled environmental technologists! With a focus on laboratory analysis and some field work, Fanshawe offers an Environmental Technology program where students learn about biology, gather and study air and water samples, investigate environmental legislation and study the principles of waste management and meteorology. In today's highly automated laboratories, the experience gained with Fanshawe's state-of-the-art instrumentation provides an edge for employers. Graduates will complete a minimum of 12 months and maximum of 16 months of coop during the 3 year program.
Fanshawe has also opened the Centre for Sustainable Energy and Environments, bringing together academic, entrepreneurial, technical and business expertise to help companies innovate in the fields of energy and the environment, with a focus on alternative energy management and green technologies. Current projects include:
