London Manufacturer is Certified as the Region's First Avionics Service Facility

London, ON - The owners and operators of private aircraft in Southwestern Ontario can now look forward to meeting their recertification and upgrade requirements closer to home.

London-based Defense & Aviation Wiring Inc. (DAVWIRE) has announced certification of the area’s first Avionics AMO (Approved Maintenance Organization) by Transport Canada.

Aircraft owners rely on inspection and repair services from specialized AMO facilities to meet regulatory standards for periodic recertifications. Other AMOs in the London area can recertify structural and mechanical components of the aircraft, but no local facility has been qualified to service the electronic systems that comprise aircraft avionics.

DAVWIRE will collaborate with structural and mechanical AMOs that now operate at regional airports to deliver avionics service at their sites. This in-field service will be supported by DAVWIRE’s new bench facility at its head office location near London International Airport.

Mark MacKenzie, President of DAVWIRE, says industry insiders are welcoming the new avionics capability. “We have talked to many AMOs who provide complementary services and they are excited by what our service offers customers. By bringing an avionics capability to these established shops, aircraft owners will have access to a ‘one-stop’ service for all their recertifications and upgrades.”

Avionics to go!

MacKenzie explains that, as well as creating the new bench facility for detailed testing and repairs, DAVWIRE technicians will be equipped with the “ramp gear” required to deliver inspection and diagnostic services anywhere the aircraft is located. “By coordinating with the AMO services customers already know, they can save the expense and downtime of taking their aircraft to separate locations for mandatory maintenance. ‘We’ll come to you!’ DAVWIRE can complete the electrical servicing while the aircraft is already in the shop for other procedures.”

Delivering new technologies

DAVWIRE is certified to perform all required services for electrical instruments and devices ranging from Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs) and altimeters to sophisticated autopilot and communications systems, including the RVSM equipment now required for flying 29,000 feet and above. The DAVWIRE facility will also offer the full range of panel upgrades available to improve air safety and convenience. “Aviation technology is a very active and innovative field these days,” says MacKenzie. “Pilots and fleet owners are eager to move up to the ‘glass cockpit’, with more powerful instruments presented on more user-friendly displays. We’re here to help them make the transition simpler, more convenient and less costly.”

DAVWIRE Avionics services builds on more than 40 years in the avionics field in Canada. DAVWIRE is a recognized leader in aviation electrical systems and panels. Key staff offer customers extensive expertise gained through front-line experience in electronics design and manufacturing for top OEMs such as Eurocopter, Diamond Aircraft and Bombardier Aerospace.

MacKenzie has been recruiting E-licensed technicians to staff the new avionics facility and he serves on the advisory committee for the Avionics technology program launched in 2011 at Fanshawe College. In the past year, contracts for medical and aviation wire harnesses have led to the hiring of more than 30 new employees for DAVWIRE’s manufacturing division
