London transit system getting $11M gas-tax boost: MPP

The City of London will get about $11.1 million this year from Ontario’s gas tax program, the province announced Wednesday.

St. Thomas will receive about $423,000 under the program, which sends two cents on every litre sold at the pumps to municipal transit systems.

“Supporting public transit systems is more important than ever as communities struggle to maintain service levels during COVID-19,” said Jeff Yurek, Progressive Conservative MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London, said in a news release.

“This funding will help to ensure that these critical services continue to safely and efficiently get people where they need to be and drive local economic recovery.”

Last year, London received roughly the same amount of money from the gas tax.

Gas tax revenue can be used to extend service hours, buy transit vehicles, add routes, improve accessibility or other upgrades to the system.
