The Juno-winning group Okan takes the stage Saturday for the second of five Sunfest live shows ahead of July’s four-day festival at Victoria Park.
The female-led ensemble featuring Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne is on at Wolf Performance Hall at 7 p.m.
The group fuses rich Afro-Cuban roots with jazz, folk and global rhythms. They won the 2021 Juno world music award for their album Espiral.
The first live Sunfest concert in two years featured Quebec’s Genticorum on March 24. The three remaining concerts at Wolf Performance Hall are:
April 28: Soul artist Tanika Charles, a two-time Juno nominee, twice long-listed for a Polaris Music Prize. Both of her albums, 2016’s Soul Run and 2019’s Gumption, were acclaimed by critics and her latest album, Papillon de Nuit, is to be released in early April.
May 14: East Los Angeles Afro-Mexican bridge builders Las Cafeteras, who headlined TD Sunfest at Victoria Park in 2018. Their politically inspired music aims at building bridges between cultures and communities.
May 19: Twin Flames, husband-and-wife duo Chelsey June and Jaajiare. Part of an Indigenous renaissance, they are two-time Canadian Folk Music Award recipients and three-time Native American Music Award winners based in Ottawa, who perform in English, French and Inuktitut.
