The City invites Londoners to its Recreation Job Fair on Thursday, May 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre, where City staff will share information and host on-site interviews for summer job openings. Whether you’re looking for your first job or to build a career at the City, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

What jobs are you hiring for?

The City is looking for a wide range of applicants for recreation positions including day camp counsellors and playleaders, program instructors, building attendants, cashiers, and qualified lifeguards. Positions may be located at a variety of community centres, arenas, parks, and pools throughout the city. We’re also hiring cooks and food service staff to join our team at City Hall, and operational assistants to join our team at the Dundas Place Field House. How can I prepare for the job fair?

Londoners are encouraged to bring 10 copies of their resume, their availability and a list of potential locations they would like to work at. Alternatively, those in attendance can provide electronic copies of their resume to City staff through email during the job fair.

The City will be hosting a promotional contest where the first 5 attendees at the job fair will receive a recreation prize package. We encourage Londoners to show up early for a chance to receive the prize package. Snacks will also be provided during the event.

What jobs are you hiring for?

Aquatics Instructor/Lifeguard: As part of a team, instructor/lifeguards provide safe, enjoyable aquatic experiences for Londoners. In this position, you will be actively involved in programming including but not limited to swim lessons, facility rentals and drop-in recreational programming. You will also promote public water safety education and participate in drowning prevention initiatives. Successful applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria by June 30, 2023: 16 years of age, National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, and Standard First Aid.  Learn more.

Aquatic Attendant: In this position, you will be actively involved with aquatic programming including but not limited to slide supervision, wading pool supervision, support with swimming lessons, and supporting drop-in aquatic programs. You will also promote public water safety education and participate in drowning prevention initiatives. Successful applicants must meet the following mandatory criteria by June 30, 2023: 15 years of age, Bronze Cross, Assistant Instructor, and Standard First Aid. National Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, and Lifesaving Instructor preferred.

Building Attendant (Arenas): In this position, you will provide assistance in preparing Recreation and Sport facilities for programs and activities. You will also assist with set-up and take-down for activities and events, open and close facilities, conduct general maintenance, provide customer service expertise, and maintain the overall cleanliness of a facility. You will also supervise the ice surface at a City arena by skating along with the public, enforce rules and regulations, and effectively patrol public skating with an emphasis on the safety of the patrons.

Building Attendant (Aquatics Facilities): In this position, you will provide assistance in preparing aquatics facilities for programs and activities. You will also assist with set-up and take-down for activities and events, open and close facilities, conduct general maintenance, provide customer service expertise, and maintain the overall cleanliness of a facility.  

Cashier (Aquatics): In this role, you will be responsible for providing excellent customer service to Londoners, collection and accountability for all point-of-sale transactions, ensuring all cash handling is done in an accurate manner, answering the phone in a professional and courteous manner, being knowledgeable about programs at a City facility and ensuring that the front desk is clean.

Child and Youth Recreation Program Instructor: In this position, you will be responsible for leading a high-quality recreation program at specific site locations throughout London, including programs in Art, Sports, Dance, Cooking or General Interest. Other job duties include maintaining daily records, demonstrating excellent customer service skills and a positive and professional attitude and ensuring all City of London policies and practices are being followed.

Day Camp Counsellor/Playleader (Floater): In this position, you will be responsible for picking up shifts requiring coverage and leading a Day Camp or Playground program at a specific site and for appropriate supervision of the program participants. Many floaters have the opportunity to be moved into a full-time role, if interested! Some responsibilities include supervising the activities at a particular program location to ensure the care, safety and security of program participants during program hours; planning and implementing a variety of recreational programs involving crafts, active and quiet games, sports and special events for children ages four to 12, in accordance with Child and Youth Agenda priority areas; and maintaining daily records of attendance, program activities, and safety checks. Learn more.

Day Camp Designated Inclusion Support (1:1) Counsellor: In this role, you will work with Day Camp staff to adapt the Day Camp program to include campers of all abilities and needs; assist in the delivery and adaptation of program activities and special events in accordance with Child and Youth Agenda priority areas; support the delivery of the Camps on TRACKS peer-mediated social skills program; and monitor facility accommodations as per activity and safety needs. You will also be required to provide personal camper care assistance as needed (feeding, toileting, changing, administering medication, etc.). Learn more.

Day Camp Summer Surprise Counsellor: In this role, you will adapt the Day Camp program to include campers of all abilities and needs; plan and implement program activities and special events in accordance with Child and Youth Agenda priority areas; work with staff, participants, and parent/caregivers to develop appropriate behaviour modification plans as required; and use appropriate behaviour modification techniques when supervising participants. You will also be required to provide personal camper care assistance as needed (feeding, toileting, changing, administering medication, etc.). Learn more.

Job opportunities outside of recreation that we’ll be hiring for at the job fair include:

Café Food Services Staff: In this position, you will be responsible for helping support the day-to-day food service operations at City Hall (Top of the Hall Café). This includes setup and preparation of food for special functions, meetings, and corporate caterings. Other duties also include transportation (drop off and pick up) of food within the building, product inventory, dish washing, and point of sale responsibilities in the café.

Café Cook: In this position, you will be responsible for helping support the day-to-day food service operations at City Hall (Top of the Hall Café). This includes food preparation, meal service, suggested menu changes, relevant health and safety inspection requirements for food storage and control, food ordering, and other related tasks.

Operational Assistant (Dundas Place Fieldhouse): In this role, you will be responsible for cleaning all areas of the Dundas Place Fieldhouse, including staff and public washrooms, hallways, shared rooms, and other areas as required. You will also ensure walkways and entrances are free and clear of obstructions and clean and remove litter and garbage. You will also support the set-up and take-down for events on Dundas Place.
