The Canada-US Business Association is hosting a panel reviewing the NAFTA 2.0 negotiations on November 14, 2017. The panel will feature Andrea van Vugt of the Business Council of Canada; Jim Dickmeyer, former U.S. Consul General in Toronto; and Edmundo Elias, attorney in the Guadalajara office of Cacheaux, Cavazos & Newton and a principal advisor to the Mexican private sector on the NAFTA discussions. America's biggest business group is warning the Trump administration that a withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement would be a "political and economic debacle" that would cost hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs.
Talking with reporters, John Murphy, a senior official with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said the chamber would work to rally support for the trade deal and against the administration's hardline demand for concessions from Canada and Mexico.

Pessimism about the fate of NAFTA is mounting amid dismay that the U.S. wants to impose stringent new American content requirements on vehicles that are allowed duty-free movement across North America.
The United States is set to propose that cars and trucks must have at least 85 per cent North American content and at least 50 per cent specifically American content to qualify for duty-free status, according to a report by Inside U.S. Trade.

General Motors and the union representing about 2,800 striking workers at the CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., resumed talks Tuesday aimed at ending a strike now into its fourth week.
The members of Unifor Local 88 walked off the just over three weeks ago on Sept. 17. The union has been pushing hard for GM to designate the CAMI plant as the leading producer of the Equinox SUV in North America.

The former chair of Toyota Canada, Ray Tanguay, told a London business audience that automotive manufacturing is critical to Canada's future economic success.
Tanguay, who now serves as an automotive advisor to the federal and Ontario governments, said Canada and the U.S. have to learn to compete with Mexico and its lower wages.
He gave the keynote address at a conference called Manufacturing Matters at the London Convention Centre.

DesRosiers Automotive Consultants says it's looking increasingly likely that Canadians will buy more than 2 million vehicles this year after another record-setting month.
The consulting firm says September sales hit about 186,800 vehicles for a 7.7 per cent increase from the same month last year.
Last month's numbers brought total sales this year to 1.59 million, up 5.5 per cent from last year, with every month but April hitting a new record.

Canadian auto parts producer Magna International Inc said it has joined a consortium including BMW and Intel Corp to develop a self-driving vehicle platform for the use of auto makers by 2020.
The move comes as automakers are increasingly seeking alliances to share the high costs of developing self-driving vehicle technology, which requires extensive research and development and software expertise outside the traditional domain of carmakers.
