The Athletic Club announce new location in Guelph

The Athletic Club is expanding again and is proud to add Guelph, Ont., as the seventh and largest member of its group of fitness clubs.

“Guelph is a much-sought-after market because it is a city with a strong economy and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country,” said Alan Quesnel, President of The Athletic Club Group.

“We are pleased that The Athletic Club has chosen to invest in Guelph,” added City of Guelph Mayor Kate Quarrie. “This facility will meet the demand for fitness services for this area of the city as well as for the newly proposed conference centre, also being built at Gordon Street and Stone Road. The company’s commitment to provide outreach, awareness and education about health issues will also make them an asset to our community.”

The development of the new $7-million fitness club will encompass approximately three acres alongside a proposed hotel and conference centre at the corner of Stone Road and Gordon Street. The land is owned by the University of Guelph and will be leased.

Discussions and negotiations on this project started in January 2004.

“The Athletic Club will be a very welcome addition to our community,” said John Armstrong, director of real estate at the University of Guelph. “We are pleased that the club will be a part of this overall development and will complement the hotel and conference facility.”

What will make this club unique?

“We have had more than 20 years of experience in owning and operating fitness facilities and believe we bring a level of customer service and club amenities that are seldom found anywhere,” said Quesnel. “People of all ages and fitness levels will be comfortable at this club due to our welcoming atmosphere and overall commitment to customer satisfaction, which is second to none in the business.”

The 56,000-square-foot accessible facility will feature 24-hour access and the following amenities: an aquatic centre with a pool, whirlpool and steam and dry saunas; hundreds of pieces of state-of-the-art fitness equipment; squash courts; a tanning salon; a pro shop and juice bar; private showers and change rooms; a cardio theatre; and free parking.

There will also be a women’s-only fitness centre, child-care facilities, massage therapy, personal training and nutrition and weight management programs, and four studios for group exercises such as yoga, Boxercise, spinning and Pilates.

The Athletic Club’s most recent project was in Thunder Bay, where a new club opened in September of 2004. More than 4,000 members signed up during a pre-opening sales drive. The Athletic Club also has locations in Brantford, Amherstburg, Kingsville, Thunder Bay and two in London. Watch for more updates on the progress of the new facility.
