London, Ontario – The London Small Business Centre (SBC), with the support of the London Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), celebrates the first year of the New Start Program, a targeted initiative designed to support immigrant entrepreneurs in the city.
In its first year, the program contributed to the successful launch of 27 new businesses, reflecting the resilience, creativity, and determination of newcomer entrepreneurs. The New Start Program offers tailored support, including outreach, business planning, mentoring, and ongoing assistance, to help immigrant entrepreneurs overcome challenges and achieve their goals.
Recognizing the unique challenges faced by immigrants starting businesses in a new country—such as language barriers and unfamiliarity with the Canadian market—the New Start Program offers tailored support and resources to help entrepreneurs overcome these hurdles.
Key components of the program include:
- Outreach and Engagement:
The program hosted 10 outreach sessions in 2024, in partnership with organizations such as Will Employment Solutions, YMCA, LUSO, and others. Over 280 attendees from a registrant pool of more than 630 participants were introduced to entrepreneurship as a viable pathway. SBC also participated in events such as Newcomer Day and engaged with the Latina community through Juntas in London. - Business Planning Support:
Through the Newcomer Build Your Business Class, two cohorts—comprising 55 participants—received 12 hours of comprehensive training, focusing on business ideation, market research, and financial planning. - Business Launch and Ongoing Support:
The program provided over 130 consultations to newcomer entrepreneurs in 2024, along with monthly peer mentoring groups to offer continued support and networking opportunities post-launch. - Empowering Mentoring Groups:
Monthly sessions featured discussions on topics such as legal considerations, marketing strategies, HR management, and bookkeeping. With 22 participants and 12 experienced mentors, these sessions fostered collaboration and offered practical advice for navigating the complexities of entrepreneurship.
“Attending the Newcomer Build Your Business Class was an incredibly enriching experience. The sessions were engaging and packed with valuable insights that significantly enhanced my understanding of effective business planning. I left feeling inspired and better equipped with strategies to confidently pursue my entrepreneurial goals. This class is a must for anyone looking to successfully launch and grow their business.”, stated Jumoke Ajanaku, owner of OrekelewaGlow.
“Through the New Start monthly newcomer mentoring, I have met amazing immigrant entrepreneurs here in London and been inspired by their stories. I have also participated in the New Start – Newcomer Build Your Business Class, which, alongside other training, has provided me with valuable tools and resources to establish and grow my business here in Canada. I now feel more informed and empowered to navigate the Canadian market better,” said Gbenga Awomodu, owner of Tweakcentric.
“The stories of program participants highlight the program's ability to empower immigrant entrepreneurs with practical tools and strategies, creating a ripple effect of economic and social benefits for the city,” said Juliane Ferreira, the New Start Coordinator.
The London Small Business Centre is committed to empowering immigrant entrepreneurs, recognizing the vital role they play in the city's economic landscape. With the ongoing support of LEDC and community partners, the New Start Program aims to build on its 2024 achievements and continue fostering innovation and success in 2025.
