Job growth through Western's Internship Program

Celebrating 61 interns hired!
The Science Internship Program sees significant growth

London Ontario, September 13, 2012:  The Career Services office in the Faculty of Science at Western University is pleased to announce that a record breaking 61 interns have been hired for full-time paid jobs in industry and government.

“This year the number of interns hired shattered previous records. Last year we were very pleased that 42 students were employed, but this year is really something to celebrate,” said Jeff Hutter, Associate Dean (Academic) for the Faculty of Science.

Since 2003, the Science Internship program has connected students to a wide variety of industries, ranging from Biotechnology, Medical Sciences, Computers, Food & Beverage, Manufacturing, Insurance and Pharmaceutical fields in London and beyond.

“Western’s program stands out because of our longer placements,” said Lauren Starr, Industry Specialist in Science Career Services. “Senior students spend between 8 and 16 months working in industry gaining hands-on experience.”

“We have students who contribute to ensuring the quality of hundreds of thousands of dollars of product or who work directly with clients,” said Patricia Mason, Student Specialist in Science Career Services. “During a long placement like this, students make very meaningful contributions to their employers.”

Students come with a strong academic background and lab experience. “Many large and small companies return each year because of the caliber of Science students at Western,” said Starr.

“We know students will make significant contributions during their work term,” said Hutter. “And they share their positive experiences with their friends when they return to school the following year.”
