Mennonite Furniture Plus set to launch building boom

New venture turns tables on slow economy

Having trouble finding the perfect piece of furniture for your home or office? Got a great idea for a dining room suite or armoire but can’t find anyone to build it?

If you’re in the market for quality custom-built furniture, it’s time for a quick drive to Lambeth and the brand new Mennonite Furniture Plus showroom!

Located at 2200 Wharncliffe Road South, Mennonite Furniture Plus designs and builds premium quality, hand-crafted wood furniture. The business opened officially on June 2, offering customers a professional partner to help them bring their furniture dreams to life.

“Furniture is a huge part of any interior design scheme, but it can be frustrating to find the right pieces, especially if your space has unusual dimensions,” says Mennonite Furniture Plus owner Derek Allen. “A lot of the time, people settle for something that isn’t exactly what they want, but they don’t have to. We say if you can’t find it, come to us and we’ll make it for you.”

A graduate of the Woodworking Technology Program at the Woodworking Centre of Ontario (Conestoga College), Allen has been in the industry for over eight years. He hopes to use his expertise – plus a wide network of local builders and artisans – to give customers not only quality furniture, but a quality experience.

“This is very much a collaborative approach between us, our customers, and our builders,” Allen explains. “From the consultation phase to design, construction, and delivery, the customer remains very much involved. Custom furniture means meeting their exact needs, so we want them to be active participants in the process.”

The store features several different types of wood, finishes, hardware, and fabric. For customers, it’s simply a matter of choosing the right materials and settling on a design. From there, Mennonite Furniture Plus will work with professional builders to produce the piece on a pre-determined schedule.

While the showroom is located in Lambeth, the store will deliver across Ontario.

Allen says he’s excited to get his business off the ground, despite economic conditions and competition from chain stores.

“Any new business comes with risks, especially in times like these, but quality is always in demand,” Allen says. “People want to live in peaceful spaces that express their personality, and unique furniture is a great way to add individual flair. Plus, like original art, custom furniture can be a smart investment.”
