Root Awakening, a new documentary series, tackles food insecurity through the lens of one urban farm and the people who built it. Bell Fibe TV1 commissioned the series from digital story studio web.isod.es and community group Hutton House. The series follows The PATCH co-founder Faye Simmons through the challenges and triumphs of a growing season at The PATCH, an urban farm in the heart of a mid-sized city. The farm supplies emergency shelters and the London Food Bank with fresh produce while offering skills and employment training to adults with disabilities.
“The fresh, innovative approach taken by The PATCH to address food security and accessibility is a story about dignity,” said Series Producer and Director Adam Caplan. “Collaborating with the team at The PATCH meant finding new ways to bring this story to life.”
“Food insecurity and accessibility touch virtually everyone in Canada, including urban and rural populations, Indigenous peoples, and New Canadians,” said Joe Gansevles, Coordinator of Urban Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability at Hutton House. “Working with web.isod.es on this project helps many more people realize what the power of community means for them.”
“Our shows offer a unique look at the people and places that shape our communities," said Paul Gardner, Senior Producer at the Fibe TV1 network. “Root Awakening shines a light on how a community comes together to contribute towards a better path going forward and that strongly resonates with our values at Fibe TV1.”
Root Awakening is produced by Adam Caplan and Joe Gansevles with Associate Producer Holly Pugsley under the web.isod.es production company banner. The series is available now on Fibe TV1 and a public screening will be held in the Auburn Stage at The Grand Theatre in London, Ontario on February 18, 2026.
