New online tool to provide up-to-date local employment related information

LONDON, ONTARIO: The London Economic Development Corporation (LEDC), with funding from the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities in partnership with the City of London, the Elgin Middlesex Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board (EMOWPDB), Employment Sector Council London – Middlesex, Fanshawe College and Western University celebrated the launch of Worktrends.ca at the seventh annual Student 2 Business Career Networking Conference.

“London has an incredibly talented workforce. Our people are one of our biggest assets,” said Kapil Lakhotia, London Economic Development Corporation.  “We need to maintain a workforce with the right balance of generic skills and specialized expertise.  This requires an accurate understanding of current and projected skills supply and demand and up to date information for employers about the local talent pool and strong linkages between employers, education and research institutions.”

Worktrends.ca is a community-based data consortium to support the coordinated collection and dissemination of local economic data, business conditions and labour market information from local, regional, provincial and federal data sources.  It will provide the tools needed by employers, employment services providers and education institutions to share their data and enable researchers and analysts to process, aggregate, interpret and contextualize the data.  By offering community access to customized, user focused intelligence about the local and regional labour market, worktrends.ca will assist in transforming labour market information into knowledge and action.

“Worktrends.ca is more than just a website.  It also has a curriculum component that will be disseminated to third party advisors such as guidance councillors,” said Deb Mountenay, Executive Director, Elgin Middlesex, Oxford Workforce Planning and Development Board.  “Worktrends.ca aims to support our regional economic development efforts by maximizing talent attraction and retention efforts.  This model will help today’s challenges progressively transform into tomorrow’s opportunities.”

The site was designed in London by rtraction Canada Inc. and will be maintained by the Workforce Planning and Development Board.
