That’s exactly what Nafis Ahmed discovered.
Born and raised in Bangladesh, Nafis moved to Malaysia to pursue a Bachelor of Business before setting his sights on Canada for graduate studies. Initially settling in Windsor, he soon realized that London held greater opportunities for him and a more enriching experience.
His journey led him to Fanshawe College, where he enrolled in a public relations and professional communications program.
“After researching my options, I decided to move to London, Ont. And study public relations and professional communication at Fanshawe,” says Nafis. “The most valuable opportunity was a student placement with BGC London. I had a platform to showcase my capabilities, build connections and contribute to the community through my work.”
Since making the move in 2023, Nafis has found not only professional success but also a deep appreciation for London’s diverse culture and strong sense of community. His experience in the city has exceeded expectations from the career opportunities he has encountered to the rich cultural scene that makes London unique.
One highlight of his time here has been attending Sunfest, the annual festival in Victoria Park that celebrates global music, culture and community.
“I think this is an event unlike others, especially for those who enjoy culture, diversity and music,” says Nafis. “I also like parks and lakes, which London has a lot of. I enjoy how the community is close-knit and everyone tries to help each other out.”
Beyond its career and educational advantages, London is also an affordable and convenient alternative to larger cities like Toronto. The cost of living—particularly rent—is significantly lower, allowing residents to enjoy a higher quality of life without sacrificing proximity to major urban centers.
“Specific things that helped me decide to choose London were Fanshawe college, nature – especially in summer – and proximity of places I can go for day trips like Toronto and Niagara Falls,” says Nafis.
London’s strategic location, midway between Detroit and Tronto, makes it easy to explore much of southwestern Ontario. Within the city itself, residents and visitors can enjoy a vast network of trails that weave through over 350 parks, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
