Trudell Medical International

LONDON, Ontario: Monday, June 30, 2008. Trudell Medical International is proud to announce the 25th Anniversary of the Canadian invention of the AeroChamber* Brand of Valved Holding Chamber. In 1983, the AeroChamber* Brand was developed with input from Dr. Michael Newhouse and Professor Myrna Dolovich and their colleagues from the Firestone Institute of Respiratory Health at McMaster University. The rationale for the AeroChamber* Brand stemmed from the fact that respiratory symptoms associated with asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) are commonly treated with prescription aerosol medications delivered through pressurized Metered Dose Inhalers or “puffers”. Effective delivery of the medication to the lungs proved to be difficult because some puffers delivered aerosol at over 100 kilometers per hour1. The technique to press and inhale at just the right moment was difficult for many patients to achieve and medication was often deposited in the mouth instead of the airways which lead to side effects such as hoarseness. The AeroChamber* Valved Holding Chamber contained and suspended the aerosol particles until the user was ready to inhale it, which resulted in improved efficacy and fewer side effects.

The AeroChamber MAX* Valved Holding Chamber line is specifically designed to meet the needs of various patient populations. Trudell Medical International is committed to continuous innovation and over the past 25 years introduced the following product improvements:

1987: addition of the FlowSignal* Whistle to alert patients if they are inhaling too rapidly and the introduction of mask products for infants, children and adults;

1993: updated to include a transparent chamber, allowing patients to see the aerosol plume when the inhaler was actuated;

1999: a more responsive valve and baffle system designed for low tidal volumes

2004: the world’s first transparent anti-static chamber minimized static charge, increasing aerosol suspension time and providing consistent drug availability;

2007: addition of the Flow-Vu* Inspiratory Flow Indicator, a feedback tool that moves with respiration, allowing caregivers to count patient breaths, ensure a satisfactory facemask seal and perfectly coordinate actuation with inhalation.

“Trudell is extremely proud of the 25th Anniversary milestone for AeroChamber* and the significant contribution to improved healthcare this Canadian medical device innovation continues to provide on a global basis” says Mark W. Pickard, Vice President and General Manager of Trudell Medical International.

The AeroChamber* Brand of Valved Holding Chamber is proudly manufactured in London, Ontario, Canada and has been sold in 100 countries around the world.
