London Health Sciences Centre
London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), one of Canada's largest acute-care teaching hospitals, is dedicated to excellence in patient care, education and research. LHSC encompasses three hospital sites, two family medical centres, a regional cancer program, and CSTAR (Canadian Surgical Technologies & Advanced Robotics). The research arm of LHSC is Lawson Health Research Institute (Lawson), a partnership with St. Joseph's Health Care, London, and the third-largest hospital-based research institute in Canada. Lawson had 1,419 active clinical trials underway at LHSC during 2006-07, and held $49, 321,000 in its accounts for research projects at LHSC. LHSC provided training to 645 medical residents and fellows during 2006-07. The hospital is affiliated with the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario. Robarts Research Institute
Opened in 1986, Robarts Research Institute at the University of Western Ontario is a non-profit medical research facility in London, Ontario, working to investigate some of the most debilitating diseases of our time. Children's Health Research Institute
The Child Health Research Institute (CHRI) founded in 1987, is one program that is part of the Lawson Health Research Institute which encompasses research activities across all hospital sites. It is a collaborative venture of the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario Foundation, the University of Western Ontario's Department of Paediatrics, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario. The CHRI is divided into 5 thematic research programs: Developmental Biology. This is the field of life sciences that seeks to understand fundamental processes of embryonic, fetal, and postnatal development. Research in these areas have contributed to the understanding and treatment of a variety of diseases and disabilities such as birth defects, diabetes, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, growth deficiency, and infertility. Molecular Genetics. This program at CHRI has been established to support research into the understanding of genetic factors that are major determinants of health and well-being in infants and children. Medtrode's core technology is a multichannel deep brain stimulation and recording system that streamlines Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgical procedures for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's. The core technology has been licensed from the National Research Council's Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (NRC-IMTI) and Lawson Health Research Institute and is being further developed in close collaboration with them. Medtrode also works with the Robarts Research Institute and other partnering research institutions and companies on developing a portfolio of neurostimulation devices.
